The Minnesota Lynx scored 16 points off 18 turnovers on the way to a 75-65 victory over the San Antonio Silver Stars on Friday night.
"We have to be more intelligent. Sometimes it's just as simple as when to dribble and when to pass," said Silver Stars head coach Candi Harvey, whose team fell to 1-2 on the season.
Though the Silver Stars held the Lynx to 38.9% field goal shooting, Minnesota went on a 12-2 run to take a 50-46 lead early in the second half.
The Lynx had four players in double figures, led by Katie Smith with 21 points on 8-for-17 shooting. Michele Van Gorp came off the bench to dominate the post in the second half, tallying 14 points and 6 boards while playing physical defense.
"Wow, she (Van Gorp) had a great game," commented Silver Stars forward Adrienne Goodson. "She's already in her rhythm. She's very aggressive and doing great for their organization."
The Silver Stars pulled to within one point at 63-62, but the Lynx finished on a 13-2 run over the last four minutes of the game.
"It wasn't good execution down the stretch. It's just getting a feel for each other," said Harvey. "We need to remember that everything is new. We are going to be patient, but at the same time we have to push this thing and get better pretty quickly."
Margo Dydek scored 20 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Silver Stars in the loss. Jennifer Azzi had 16 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for San Antonio.
