The San Antonio Silver Stars rollercoaster season continues.
Two nights after beating the Houston Comets in one of their best offensive performances of the year, the Silver Stars suffered the worst loss in the history of the Utah Starzz-San Antonio Silver Stars franchise. San Antonio was routed 93-53 by the Seattle Storm (6-5) at Key Arena.
The Silver Stars beat the Storm 65-56 in their season-opener at the SBC Center, but have yet to win a game on the road this season.
San Antonio's leading scorer, Marie Ferdinand, was held scoreless in twelve minutes on Sunday, as the Silver Stars never got into any offensive flow. The Storm were led by Lauren Jackson's 24 points (16 in the first half). Seattle's Sue Bird continued her excellent point guard play with six assists and zero turnovers in 25 minutes against the Silver Stars.
Seattle was up by 15 at halftime, then went on an 18-0 run early in the second stanza, building a 68-35 lead. The Storm shot 49.2% from the field and 6-for-14 from beyond the arc in the contest.
San Antonio has been turnover-prone and outworked on the boards in their losses this season. And the trend continued Sunday night. The team committed a season-high 22 turnovers and lost the rebounding battle 33-22.
The Silver Stars (former Utah Starzz) lost in the Western Conference Finals last season and hoped to improve on that mark this season upon relocating to San Antonio. The team had four returning starters and beefed up their depth by trading power forward Natalie Williams to Indiana for Sylvia Crawley and rookie Gwen Jackson before the season began.
The trade made the team more versatile in the frontcourt and after their opening night victory, it seemed they were on the right track. But the focus and discipline that is preached by head coach Candi Harvey in practice has yet to translate to consistency during games.
The Silver Stars will try to regroup before meeting the Monarchs on Tuesday night in Sacramento, then facing the league-leading Los Angeles Sparks on Thursday afternoon at the SBC Center.
Adrienne Goodson scored 15 points and Margo Dydek tallied 14. Gwen Jackson was also in double-digits for San Antonio with 10 points and a team-high six rebounds. Seattle's 93 points was a franchise record.
