The San Antonio Silver Stars headed into Los Angeles Wednesday afternoon riding a six-game road losing streak. They emerged with a 70-62 come-from-behind victory over the first-place Los Angeles Sparks.
San Antonio (8-16) won their second straight game since the firing of head coach Candi Harvey on Saturday. The short-handed Sparks were still playing without All-Stars Lisa Leslie and Temecka Dixon who are both sidelined with knee injuries.
Los Angeles hit 23-of-62 (37.1%) from the floor. And the Silver Stars, under interim coach Shell Dailey, shot only 30.2% from the field but will take a victory any way they can get it.
Trailing 37-28 early in the second half, San Antonio reeled off 12 straight points to take a three-point lead with 12 minutes left in the game. Rookie Gwen Jackson scored seven of her 11 points during the run. Guard Marie Ferdinand led the Silver Stars, scoring 16 of her game-high 20 points in the second half.
The Silver Stars seem to be more comfortable on the floor since the departure of Harvey. Currently in sixth place in the Western Conference, the Silver Stars look to make a run for the fourth and final playoff spot.
Adrienne Goodson had 10 points and six rebounds for the Silver Stars. Jennifer Azzi contributed 11 points. Tausha Mills had a team-high nine rebounds off the bench for San Antonio.
DeLisha Milton scored 18 points and Mwadi Mabika had 17 for Los Angeles Nikki Teasley had 16 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists.
The Silver Stars' next two games are against the Houston Comets. San Antonio faces the Comets on Friday night at the SBC Center at 7:30pm and then Saturday night in Houston.
